Caucasian rugs come from the Caucasus Mountain chain that stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea over 1200km. The lustrous and supple wool from the local sheep makes up both the warp and weft of these rugs. Most of the rugs from this region are woven with the Ghiordes knot and predominately have a geometric design. The patterns are stylized and express simple motifs consisting of figures, animals, flowers, stars, squares and lozenges frequently placed without attention to symmetry.
