These
rugs are typically woven in the western region of Turkey
and are identified by their use of cotton in the warp
and weft, leading them to be called city rugs. These areas
of production are in and around the major city of Istanbul
such as Sivas, Izmir, Isparta and Kayseri (which has been
an important weaving center for centuries). These city
type rugs are generally considered to be more traditional
in design with small repeated elements or a central medallion.
The primary colours used are shades of red, blue and yellow
with combinations of green, purple and orange. Browns
and blacks are generally used for outlining designs.
